The Friends of Burnham Library
About
Friends of Burnham Library was set up in the summer of 2009 it was officially launched by the group’s Patron, the Late Sir Terry Wogan, at the Grand Opening of the newly refurbished Library on October 5th 2009.
It was set up under the umbrella of the registered charity, Burnham Community Association and the Friends organisation is a Committee of the Charity.
The Friends aim to encourage greater community involvement in the library, to promote the love of reading and learning and to raise and spend funds for the library to enhance services and projects. The Friends organise and support a wide variety of events at the Library and always welcome new members.
During 2013 and 2014, Buckinghamshire County Council and the Friends of Burnham Library worked on developing a partnership model for Burnham Library that will build on the successful Lottery funded project with the intention of increasing activity and extending opening hours.
The work done over the last five years since the Lottery project commenced has seen a transformation of the Library and as part of the continuance of that, the model being developed will see the County Council continuing to manage and maintain the building with the team of Library staff supported by local volunteers from the Friends of Burnham Library and the community, who will deliver added value activities, help fundraise and work with the staff to increase the Library opening hours.
The Friends of the Library have already been working in partnership with Library staff to deliver a wide range of activities and services and community events, such as the recent outstandingly successful Arts Festival. The intent of this approach is for the Library to continue to be the focal point for the community based on a sustainable and cost effective partnership, where the Library generates significant income from room hire and chargeable activities. This can be done by increasing the availability of the Library and by the recruitment of volunteers to enable the opening hours to be increased, and an even wider range of training and activities to be offered
Annual membership is just £5 for an adult and a £1 for a child.
